Best deposit accounts by real net return
Deposit accounts ranked by what you actually collect, not by the headline rate. Interest is taxed at 26%, and the balance carries a 0.2% annual stamp duty: who absorbs it changes the ranking. The duty is a flat 0.2 points, while a gap in gross rates weighs only 0.74 times itself after tax — so below 0.27 points of difference the bank that pays the duty always wins, even if it advertises less. Every rate is read from the bank’s own information sheet, with the edition date shown on the card.
Deposit accounts where the bank pays the stamp duty
Stamp duty on deposit accounts is 0.2% of the balance per year and is due by law: the difference is who pays it. On these accounts the bank absorbs it, and that is 0.2 points of return that stay with you every year, at any amount deposited. It is the single factor that most often flips a comparison between two deposits: 3.50% with the duty on you returns 2.39% net; the same 3.50% with the bank paying returns 2.59%.
Deposit accounts you can break before maturity
Most Italian deposit accounts cannot be touched: their information sheets rule out access to the funds «not even partially» before maturity, and there is no penalty because there is no option. These do provide an exit — but almost always at a price worth reading first: some apply a reduced withdrawal rate, others wipe out accrued interest entirely and return only the capital. Each card quotes the clause from the information sheet.
Best zero-fee current accounts
Current accounts available in Italy with a €0 monthly fee, ranked by editorial rating. A zero fee is only the starting point: also check transfer costs, ATM withdrawals and the state stamp duty (€34.20/year, due above a €5,000 average balance).
Best cards with no foreign fees (0% FX)
