Bitkey Bitkey

4.3/5 4.6/5 · Data verified on

Bitkey, made by Block Inc. (Jack Dorsey's company behind Cash App and Square), is a Bitcoin-only hardware wallet built for simplicity. It drops the classic single-key model: it uses a 2-of-3 multisig in which the user holds two keys (one on the fingerprint-enabled hardware device, one in the mobile app) and Block keeps the third, used only for recovery. No single key, including Block's, can authorize a transaction alone: funds stay self-custodial, but the recovery key held by the company is a trade-off to weigh. The device talks to the app over NFC (tapping the card to the phone) and is not air-gapped. Firmware and apps are open-source. Price around €196 (from €230).

Strengths

  • Bitcoin-only with a simple setup; 2-of-3 multisig with two user-held keys (hardware + app) and assisted recovery; fingerprint sensor on the device; open-source firmware and apps; solid company (Block Inc.).
  • Self-custody: funds stay in your wallet — the platform cannot touch them.
  • No KYC: usable without identity verification.
  • Open-source, verifiable code.

Weaknesses

  • The multisig's third key is held by Block: while it cannot move funds on its own, it brings a corporate party into the recovery model, less pure than a fully self-contained wallet; NFC communication, not air-gapped; Bitcoin-only (no multi-asset); reliance on the mobile app.
  • No notable sovereignty drawback documented.

Verdict

A S ★ 4.3/5 ★ 4.6/5

Score 4.3/5, very strong profile. In its favour: bitcoin-only with a simple setup; 2-of-3 multisig with two user-held keys (hardware + app) and assisted recovery; fingerprint sensor on the device; open-source firmware and apps; solid company (Block Inc.). The trade-off to weigh: the multisig's third key is held by Block: while it cannot move funds on its own, it brings a corporate party into the recovery model, less pure than a fully self-contained wallet; NFC communication, not air-gapped; Bitcoin-only (no multi-asset); reliance on the mobile app.

On the Sovereignty lens the score is 4.6/5 (outstanding): the strength is fund control (5.0/5), while censorship resistance (4.0/5) is the weak link.

FAQ

How much does Bitkey cost?

Bitkey costs about €196 (discounted from €230 on the official store). The price covers the hardware device; the mobile app is free. Data from the Bitkey store, August 2026.

Can Block move my funds with its key?

No: Bitkey uses a 2-of-3 multisig and two keys are needed to sign. You hold two (hardware device and app); Block keeps only one, used for recovery. A single key, including Block's, is not enough to authorize a transaction. It is still a model trade-off: a third party is involved in recovery.

Does Bitkey support coins other than Bitcoin?

No: Bitkey is Bitcoin-only by design, to keep the product simple and the attack surface small. It does not handle Ethereum, tokens or other chains.
