Nexi — Carta di credito
Nexi Payments S.p.A. · Visa/Mastercard
The Nexi credit card (applied for directly with Nexi Payments) comes in three tiers — Carta Nexi/Classic at €40/year, Nexi Prestige/Gold at €150, Nexi Excellence/Black at €250 — on your choice of Visa or Mastercard network. It can work as a charge card (no interest if paid in full) or revolving. It is a widely accepted card but with no native cashback, and a 2.5% FX fee on foreign-currency purchases that makes it expensive for frequent overseas spenders.

Plans & pricing
Strengths
- Choice of Visa or Mastercard network, widely accepted in Italy and abroad
- Dual nature charge or revolving: used as a charge card it accrues no interest (0% nominal rate)
- No late-payment default interest; capped, transparent late fees (€20/€30/€40)
- Leading Italian issuer (Nexi) with management app and free iosi loyalty programme
- No notable sovereignty advantage documented.
Weaknesses
- 2.5% FX fee on foreign-currency purchases, high versus fee-free cards
- Non-negligible annual fee (€40 base, up to €250 Excellence) and no native cashback
- Expensive cash advances (max 4.80%, min €0.52 euro area / €5.16 non-euro) and high revolving APR disclosed only in the contract's SECCI
- Traditional credit card: not self-custody — the account requires full KYC, a credit check, and can be closed or reported to credit bureaus by the issuer.
- Full KYC required: verified identity, zero pseudonymity.
- Funds can be frozen at the platform’s discretion.
- Subject to regulation (Credit card on an IT e-money (IMEL) licence (Bank of Italy)): reporting to authorities and freezes on order.
- FATF-aligned jurisdiction: strong cooperation with authorities.
Verdict
The Nexi credit card is a reliable, widely accepted instrument from a leading Italian issuer, and used as a charge card it costs no interest. On the protection front, though, it stays in the lower band: the 2.5% FX fee is high, there is no native cashback, the fee starts at €40 and rises to €250 on premium tiers, and the revolving APR is not transparent in the Information Sheet alone. Fine for those wanting a classic bank credit card, less so for foreign-currency spenders or perk-seekers.
A credit card is a credit line, not custody of funds: there is neither self-custody nor a user balance here. It remains a fully tracked and censorable instrument — full KYC, a Nexi Payments (Italian e-money institution) issuer that profiles transactions and can suspend the line. On the sovereignty lens it is the opposite of trustless tools: no anonymity, no censorship resistance.
