Strengths

  • Smart fee waived for under-30s (full €6.70/month discount)
  • Free Mastercard debit card (+ domestic circuits) on all modules
  • Discounts stackable down to a zero fee (salary, policies, seniority, assets)
  • Supervised bank with FITD deposit guarantee up to €100,000, branch network and BNP Paribas group
  • No notable sovereignty advantage documented.

Weaknesses

  • Among the highest fees in the segment: Smart €6.70/month + €34.20 stamp duty ≈ €114.60/year without discounts
  • On the Smart module transactional operations are charged: online SEPA transfer €1, other-bank ATM withdrawal €2
  • Zeroing the fee above age 30 requires combining salary crediting with BNL insurance/investment products
  • Opening the Smart module at a branch costs €15 (free online only)
  • Custodial: the platform holds your funds and can freeze or lose them.
  • Full KYC required: verified identity, zero pseudonymity.
  • Subject to regulation (IT banking licence (Bank of Italy)): reporting to authorities and freezes on order.
  • FATF-aligned jurisdiction: strong cooperation with authorities.
  • Closed source: no way to verify what it does with wallet and data.

Verdict

C D ★ 3.1/5 ★ 1.3/5

On protection BNL is solid — a bank supervised by the Bank of Italy, FITD €100,000, BNP Paribas group — but the BNL X account is among the priciest in the segment: the Smart module costs €6.70/month and even charges for online transfers (€1) and off-network withdrawals (€2). The discount mechanism exists and is documented, but zeroing the fee above age 30 goes through the bank's insurance and investment products: more lock-in than value. Good only for under-30s or customers already deeply banked with BNL. Verified on the information sheet dated 18/06/2026.

Supervised bank account: custodial, full KYC, censorable and freezable by court order or AML obligation. The FITD guarantee and Bank of Italy supervision — strengths for protection — are exactly what distance it from the trustless model. No self-custody, no permissionless use: on the sovereignty lens it sits at the opposite pole from a self-custody wallet.

FAQ

How much does the BNL X account cost?

It depends on the module: Smart €6.70/month (€80.40/year), Powered €9.70/month (€116.40/year), Full €17.70/month (€212.40/year), plus €34.20 stamp duty. The fee decreases with salary/pension crediting (−€2), policies (−€1 or −€3), recurring investment plans (−€1), account seniority and invested assets, down to full zeroing.

Is it free for under-30s?

Yes, on the Smart module: a holder (or joint holder) under 30 gets a €6.70/month discount that zeroes the fee until they turn 30.
